The user, Antony ter Horst of the Netherlands, bought the RTX 3090 Founders Edition two weeks ago. But the card’s memory temperatures routinely reached 110 degrees Celsius within only a minute or two of actual use, a major sign of overheating.
Horst decided to take the unit apart. That’s when he discovered the unlikely culprit: A piece of latex-like material sitting over the card’s memory chips. VideoCardz was first the report(Opens in a new window) the news.
The white part on the glove is the thermal padding, which normally sits on the opposite panel. It seems the finger cot slipped from a factory worker’s hand as the graphics card was sealed.

“I was like WTF, maybe there’s some insulation somewhere or something you know, to protect certain parts,” he told PCMag when recounting the unwelcome discovery.
Although the object is shaped like a condom, Horst suspects it’s a finger cot(Opens in a new window) a factory worker wore while assembling the card. Somehow, the glove ended up being sealed inside the unit. Horst posted(Opens in a new window) a picture of his discovery on Reddit, which sparked numerous condom-related jokes. Since removing the finger cot, his card now runs at 86 degrees Celsius.

Nvidia didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. But for months now, PC users have been pointing out(Opens in a new window) that the Founders Editions of the RTX 3090 and 3080 cards can run hot for high workloads, such as cryptocurrency mining. This can then allegedly cause the GPUs to throttle. To fix the issue, PC users have been replacing the cards’ original thermal padding.

Of course, some readers may be skeptical about Horst’s discovery. Unfortunately, he only took one picture of the finger cot on the GPU before removing it. In the meantime, Horst says he plans on replacing the thermal pads on his own card since the original ones broke after he decided to disassemble the product. He’s also been in contact with Nvidia’s customer support, but it remains unclear if the company will honor the product’s warranty due to him taking it apart.
