Intel’s most entry-level Alder Lake CPU, the dual-core Celeron G6900, has single-core performance on par with the 5.3GHz Core i9-10900K processor

Intel’s 12th-generation Alder Lake lineup was recently expanded with a range of entry-level options including Pentium and Celeron CPUs. One of these chips featured within the Geekbench benchmark and offers some really interesting performance numbers.

As far as specs are concerned, the Intel Celeron G6900 processor features two cores and two threads, based on a 10nm ESF Golden Cove core architecture. As you can tell, it is a very entry-level dual-core processor with a clock speed of 3.4GHz. The CPU carries 4MB of L3 cache and 2.5MB of L2 cache inside the 46W TDP package. Being an entry-level design, the chip will cost just $42 and can be used for entry-level eSports titles and standard desktop workloads.

Intel Celeron G6900 tested on ASRock Z690M Phantom Gaming 4 motherboard. Clock speeds are rated at 4.40GHz which means the user may have enabled BFB or Base Frequency Boost technology to increase clock speeds by +1GHz by raising the power limit. A total of 16GB of DDR4 memory was also offered on the platform as this motherboard only comes in DDR4 flavors.

As for performance, the Intel Celeron G6900 scored 1408 points in the single-core and 2610 points in the multi-core test. In terms of single-core performance, the 3.4-4.4GHz CPU is faster than the Intel Core i9-10900K which has a maximum boost clock of 5.3GHz (1-core). This 10-core CPU scores 1,393 ST points in the same benchmark. Celeron obviously doesn’t match the Core i9 in multi-threaded benchmarks.

The dual-core CPU is on par with the Ryzen 3 3200G, AMD FX-9370, and Core i5-4690K in multi-threaded tests which should be expected from a dual-core and non-SMT chip. The Ryzen 3 3200G is a 4-threaded, 4-threaded part of ‘Zen 2’, so a chip with half as many cores/threads provides higher performance than a single thread and comparable multi-threaded performance is really good.
