AMD kicked off its latest extension of the “Zen 3” era with the release of a batch of new Ryzen 5000 series processors. We’ve got up to seven new processors coming from the company, with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D topping the announcements. This new octa-core chip is basically an upgraded version of the Ryzen 7 5800X. What is 3D V-cache?
One of the main differences between the Ryzen 7 5800X and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the fact that the new chip takes advantage of AMD’s 3D cache. The cache, for those who don’t know, is basically an extension of the system’s RAM. The cache acts as a backup storage for quick and easy access to a portion of the storage.
The difference between a 2D cache (the standard cache found in most CPUs) and a 3D cache is that the 2D cache is stacked sideways. This arrangement limits the number of granules you can add to a given processed block. The 3D cache changes that with vertical stacking. This kind of arrangement greatly increases the number of chiplets you can add, resulting in a larger cache capacity.
We’re looking at 96 MB L3 cache in the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D versus 32 MB L3 cache in the older Ryzen 7 5800X. According to AMD, the new chip provides a significant performance improvement over the current chip just by taking advantage of the additional cache. While we haven’t tested this theory yet, it will be interesting to see how it compares to some competing chips on the market. The Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 7 5800X3D have 8 cores and 16 threads. In fact, both CPUs are based on Zen 3 architecture as well. However, the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 3D cache is expected to perform much better than the old chip due to the additional L3 cache. The additional L3 cache will likely pay huge dividends when it comes to overall gaming performance.
According to AMD’s internal testing, simply adding more cache resulted in a massive 40% performance increase over the Ryzen 7 5800X. This is exactly why AMD has indicated that it is making a “generational leap” in gaming performance with a simple addition of cache. AMD goes so far as to say that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the fastest gaming processor in the world right now. This likely means it’s better than the Intel Core i9 12900K chip, although we’ll have to come back to this later once we have a chance to test it out.
However, the Ryzen 7 5800X has faster cores compared to the new chip. As you can already tell by looking at the specs table, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X has a base speed of 3.9GHz and a boost base speed of 4.7GHz. On the other hand, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D features a base clock of 3.4GHz and a boost clock of 4.5GHz. Despite the slower cores, the new chip is said to perform better than the Ryzen 7 5800X. No support for overclocking?
Another thing to note about the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is that it does not support overclocking. There has been a lot of controversy about this, but the new chip appears to be unlocked for overclocking. One of the main reasons behind this may be poor heat dissipation. Stacked molds can make it difficult to cool the chip underneath. We’ll probably have to wait until we get our hands on one of these chips to see how far you can push it.
On the other hand, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X is completely unlocked for overclocking, which means you should be able to overclock that particular chip without any issues. The Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 7 5800X3D both have a max. The operating temperature is 90°C, neither of which comes with a CPU cooler. Pricing and availability
AMD has officially revealed the prices and release date of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU. It will be available to purchase starting April 20 for $449. That’s the same price that the Ryzen 7 5800X debuted at. On the other hand, the Ryzen 7 5800X is available in the market right now for around $350.
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X delivers great performance for gaming as well as content creation, making it a great overall CPU.
Which one should you buy?
Considering the fact that the Ryzen 7 5800X is now available for as low as $359, you’re looking at a price difference of roughly $100, plus the additional cost of a CPU cooler. Is the performance difference sufficient to justify an upgrade? Well, given the records that AMD shares, it definitely looks like a solid gaming chip. But unless you’re after the absolute best performance for an enthusiast build, we think the Ryzen 7 5800X is still a solid pickup at $359. It’s also worth noting that AMD’s new Ryzen 7000 series chipset will be here in a few months and will bring the new Zen 4 architecture to the table with some significant performance improvements and new features.
